Joomla Upgrade

Following this month there would be no more security updates released for Joomla 1.5 version. And it is expected that, the transitional upgrades such as 1.6 and 1.7 versions will follow the same fate too, very soon. So it is advisable to upgrade the existing 1.5 version websites to 2.5 as soon as possible, to be in the safe zone.

Apart from the security concerns, there are some other reasons for the immediate up-gradation too. With subsequent releases more functional features have been added while defunct features are omitted or simplified. The later versions are more user-friendly with greater controls, improved SEO, faster speed and more flexibility. The user management and admin management features have also improved drastically. It is better to switch over to the 2.5 version to enjoy the increased functionality of Joomla 2.5.

Just like creating a Joomla website, the up-gradation process from one version to another is also equally difficult and time consuming, for which expertise knowledge is required. Otherwise, there are chances of losing essential features of the website while carrying out the execution. Several components have to be built to assist in this process. And unfortunately, not all components work properly in all 1.5 version websites, for which chances of additional work cannot be undermined at times. But on the contrary, Joomla upgrade from 2.5 to latest versions is not that difficult to achieve. All upgrades can be easily carried out in the Joomla administrative back-end, with a single click installation process. It is done by simply changing the paths in the configuration file.

There are some basic steps that are carried out each time during any Joomla upgrade. These are:

1. A backup of the complete website and data base is a must

2. Identify, locate and download all the necessary extensions required

3. Up-gradation of Joomla 1.5 template to 2.5

4. Migration of all the categories, articles, images and contacts

5. Separate installation of components, plug-ins and components

Once everything has been set-up and contents have been moved, the next step is to remove the Joomla 1.5 website from the server and moving the new upgraded site to the root of the server. If it still seems to be too difficult, then there are a number of service providers available over the internet which may offer assistance in this process.
